Background

Who is Arnold W Thomas?

It has been my honor to be the Vice Chairman of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of Duck Valley and to have been their elected leader since 2017. I am a social worker with a Master of Social Work degree, a Clinical Chaplain and a Pastoral Counselor. I am also an advocate for those with disabilities. I believe that politics is the highest form of spirituality.

Some of my accomplishments as a representative of my community are:

  • * Leading efforts to improve voting access for our community.
  • * Establishing the first ever voting machines on the Duck Valley reservation.
  • * Partnering with the Nevada Secretary of State to ensure that we can register to vote using Tribal IDs.
  • * Working to replace the Owyhee School, with the new school now under construction.
  • * Assisting in the development of the Walking Pathway Trail in our community.
  • * Acquiring funding for a new sewer project and clean drinking water.
  • * Facilitating the Wood for Life Project which provides firewwood for the community.

These are just some of the projects I have personally been involved with in my community. As your next assemblyman, I hope to bring this same dedication to the improvement of the lives of everyone in Assembly District 32.

Issues

Health Care

Nevada, especially rural Nevada, faces a shortage of qualified medical professionals that presents a crisis to access health care. We need to make health care affordable and available to every Nevadan.

Housing

Housing should be considered a basic human right. Housing costs in Nevada have put a tremendous strain on households. We need policies that ensure that all Nevadans have a home they can call their own.

Water Access and Quality

Water is an enormous issue in most of Nevada. We need sensible policies that balance current water usage with availability and ensure that sufficient access to drinkable water is available for everyone for generations to come.

Education

Education is a key issue all over Nevada, but it is too easy for loud voices to drown out the needs of rural Nevada. All students in the state deserve access to a quality education, including higher education opportunities, regardless of where in the state they live.
